Tebtunis Exhibit and SymposiumIn recognition of the 100th anniversary of Phoebe Apperson Hearst's commission to Arthur Grenfell and Bernard Hunt to excavate at Tebtunis, Egypt, on behalf of the University of California, the Bancroft Library and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology are mounting an exhibit entitled "Ancient Lives: The Tebtunis Papyri in Context." Tebtunis papyri, crocodile mummies, and other artefacts from the site will be on display in the Bancroft Library Gallery. The opening reception will be Friday, September 24, and will coincide with a symposium entitled "The Tebtunis Papyri: the First 100 Years" sponsored by the Bancroft Library and the Department of Classics. The session on Friday, September 24, will present an overview intended for a general audience. In the sessions on Saturday, September 25, more specialized presentations will demonstrate the range of topics that can be studied in conjunction with the Tebtunis materials and ongoing archaeological exploration of the Fayum. Speakers will convey something about past and current research in areas such as social history, administrative history, cultural exchange, and religion, and will also pinpoint directions in which future study of the Tebtunis material might be taken. The Symposium will conclude with a round-table discussion of the latter topic, which is important to current efforts to create an Organized Research Unit devoted to the Tebtunis Papyri owned by the Bancroft Library. The Symposium is made possible by the financial support of the Department of Classics, the Bancroft Library, APIS (Advanced Papyrological Information System), the Dean of Arts and Humanities, the Dean of the Graduate Division, and the Townsend Center for the Humanities.

A British Academy Symposium
The year 1898 saw a newcomer on the papyrological scene: the first volume of The Oxyrhynchus Papyri began the publication of Grenfell and Hunt’s remarkable finds at Bahnasa. To mark the centenary of the series the British Academy is sponsoring a symposium, to be held in Oxford and London in July, 1998. The symposium will take place in Oxford and London on 15-18 July, 1998. Funding has been provided by the British Academy, the Craven Committee, the Board of Management of the Griffith Insitute and the Faculty Board of Literae Humaniores.
Please do not attempt to reply by email, but
print or copy the form and return it by post as soon as possible, together with a cheque (made payable to the British Academy) for the total cost of any meals or accommodation you have requested, plus the registration fee, to Dr A K Bowman, Christ Church, Oxford OX1 1DP. |

They say that "money talks". Indeed the coins in this display have much to relate about the public agendas of the Roman emperors, and how they contrived to parade various facets of themselves (some far from truthful!) before their subjects. We see how the rulers of Rome and Ptolemaic Egypt used coins as miniature vehicles for advertising religious allusions, military achievements, dynastic aspirations and splendid public monuments. Come find out if their coin images do justice to Nero's savagery and Cleopatra's beauty.
